Egg Donors

Egg donors are women who donate their eggs so that other women facing reproductive difficulties can become mothers. It's common for recipients to wonder what the donor is like.
Donor profile
Most donors are between 19 and 28 years old, although the legal age range is 18 to 35. Their details are recorded in Spain's National Donor Registry, managed by the Ministry of Health.
Donors may or may not already be mothers, and they may have donated previously. The key requirement is that no more than six children in total may be born from the same donor — whether those are her own children or the result of previous donations.
Why women donate
One of the most common motivations for donating is altruism — the desire to help another woman fulfil her dream of becoming a mother. Beyond that, the information that comes from the genetic and gynaecological testing carried out as part of the process is often a reason in itself. There is also financial compensation to cover expenses such as travel and time away from work, which may encourage women to go ahead with the process.
Studies show that donors don't regret having donated — in fact, a significant number choose to donate more than once.
Legal requirements
- Good physical and mental health, with no genetic, congenital, or hereditary diseases
- No personal or family history of genetic or hereditary conditions
- Full legal capacity to act
- Not being adopted, as in that case her biological origins would be unknown
Although Spanish law is explicit that donation is anonymous and the donor's identity cannot be revealed — either to the child or to the family, under any circumstances — donors do agree that the clinic may contact them in the rare event that this becomes necessary for medical reasons relating to the child. Any such contact is always channelled through the clinic.
From a psychological standpoint, donors must also complete a mandatory screening protocol.
